To me, puppet is an embodiment of the emotions I experienced when I felt at my lowest and as if I was not in control of my life. I felt like a puppet- lost, insecure, worthless and as though others were taking the lead in my life, and I - simply following. I created puppet in an attempt to understand and explore these emotions, so that I may one day free myself from the strings that bind me. We are a society of puppets.The strings holding us back are the expectations society places on us- for example, to conform to the gender binary and to follow traditional social norms. From a young age we are taught to strive for fame and fortune as opposed to carving our own unique niche in the world and creating our own successes however big or small they may be. I've come to realise that puppet is my reflection and I hope to help others find themselves too.
Puppet draws inspiration from a number of extremely talented individuals-artists like Basquiat, Warhol and Van Gogh to name a few; even heroes from my own generation - whose music resonates with my outlook on life i.e. Tyler the Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean and Janelle Monae.
Puppet aims to be an eco-friendly clothing company. Our focus is on creating sustainable pieces. All items will be manufactured in a carbon-neutral factory from locally sourced materials. Packaging will be biodegradable, to minimise our impact on the environment. Ultimately our objective is to work towards uplifting local South African communities.
